Day 13

10/07 Day 13

Typhoons maybe, but no storms

We couldn't leave Florida for a second time without trying out one of its famous water parks. We decided to head to Typhoon Lagoon near Orlando, and this fitted in nicely with the weather patterns, given there was little chance of any storm chasing to be had. We set off at the crack of dawn, arriving at Typhoon Lagoon just after opening time around 9:30am..

The park itself is quite large and has numerous water slides and attractions. Perhaps its most famous asset is the huge wave pool at the centre of the park, surrounded by sandy beaches. The pool is constantly washed with small waves for people to bob around in, but every five minutes or so, huge water tanks behind the pool fill up and release hundreds of tonnes of water into the pool in an instant. This creates a huge wave, rising several feet above the heads of swimmers, and blasting shorewards through the thousands of bathers.

We left the water park by early afternoon and headed to a large outdoor shopping near Bradenton. By early evening, a few small storms had fired to our south along the Nature Coast, and made a nice sight at sunset. This was our first ever day in Florida without seeing lightning or any real thunderstorm activity. We were expecting it though so weren't too disappointed.

A wide angle shot of the main wave pool at Typhoon Lagoon.
.

And here's the main show! The huge wave rises up in the deep end and slams forwards towards the crowds.
.

Bren bobs around, waiting for the wave to return.
.

He's in there somewhere, probably with someone else's foot in his face or something.
.

It's amazing there aren't injuries galore every time the wave heads for shore. It's so big, it even crashes over the 10ft walls at the side of the pool.
.

Lots of people. Lots of potential drownees.
.
This short video is in two parts. The first part shows the park staff whipping the crowd into a frenzy before the big wave is released. The second part shows Bren tackling the wave, if you can see him!

We traded in our vehicle again for the last couple of days ;-)
.

Just to prove we didn't take our eyes off the weather completely, an evening thunderstorm pops off to our south....
.

.... and lights up nicely in the setting sun.
